What
Do I Need To Know About Web Design?
INTRODUCTION
The Internet
is a rapidly evolving and changing universe, and the technologies
available for website designers are changing just as fast. Web
browsers are getting more sophisticated and more and more people
are opting to throw out their old modem for an in home high-speed
connection. All this change has a profound effect on website design
though.
BROWSERS
The web browser
is the key your computer uses to unlock the web. Every website
is designed with a language called HTML although even this is
now changing. Your web browser interprets the HTML and other technologies
in a web page and displays it on your screen in a readable format.
In you want to see what lies beneath a website, click your right
mouse button on any web page and choose View Source
to see the HTML code.
COMPATIBILITY
Not all browsers
interpret a web page the same way though. Usually the differences
are subtle, but sometimes they are more serious. Some web browsers
may NOT be able to display a particular page at all! Some people
are still using browsers designed to display text only (No graphics).
Most people
use either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator as
their web browser. As these browsers get more sophisticated, they
can interpret and display more and more complex pages. When you
design a website, you have to keep in mind that many people out
there are NOT using the latest and greatest web browser out there.
If you are using the latest and greatest web technologies like
streaming video, people with older browsers may not be able to
view your pages correctly. It pays to know your audience.
If you are
sure the vast majority of your audience is using newer browsers,
you can safely use the latest technologies to improve your site.
If you are not sure, you must play it safe to maximize your audience.
